The Human Microbiome is a complex biological system that inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract. The evolving medical understanding of the microbiome has practical applications for general health and wellness, and human space exploration. Dr Caswell and her team have a researched and peer review published on this topic, in 2026 earning an Editor’s Certificate for their paper in Oral, naming them as worldwide expert commentary on this human ecological system.
To cover the depth of work the course is offered in parts, with self directed peer review papers and reading. As a new concept in human medicine and wellness, participants are encouraged to understand the foundational ecological concepts of microbiome, macrobiome and how habitat, materials, social interactions, diet and nutrition, as well as genetics influence the microbiome constituents. The microbiome constituents in turn influence bodily systems, in space this ecological balance is interrupted by a number of insults, and is covered in the last course, which is designed for space medicine enthusiasts.
